Introducing Green Grip: Heineken’s newest packaging innovation

Heineken is eliminating plastic from millions of cans as it rolls out innovative sustainable packaging across thousands of UK retailers

The effect single-use plastic is having on our planet cannot be ignored. And although plastic accounts for 3% of its overall packaging, as a company Heineken is continuously looking for ways to improve its impact on the planet. That’s why it is replacing the plastic rings from its multi-pack cans with a new bespoke packaging innovation called Green Grip. This innovation is saving over 500 tonnes of plastic every year, the equivalent to 94 million plastic bags.

Green Grip is a 100% plastic-free robust cardboard topper. It is recyclable, compostable and sustainably sourced. And importantly for shoppers, it is easy to carry!

As part of a £22 million investment, this eco-friendly solution was made possible thanks to the hard work of Heineken staff from the Manchester Brewery who overcame Covid-19 challenges to get it on to supermarket shelves across the UK. Green Grip is being rolled out across Heineken, Foster’s and Kronenbourg 1664, with the rest of our beers and ciders to follow.
